facing the music, writing excerpt

#WIPpet Wednesday – August 08, 2018

Hello and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a blog hop wherein writers share an excerpt from their current WIP that somehow relates to the date.  To join in, simply click the blue linky up there to the right.

I’m feeling a bit behind on writing this week, as uni has taken over a bit. I have to do a presentation on my major project for the current course I’m doing this Friday. However, I did hit 20k earlier this week. This feels pretty significant for me, since I only started Unchanging Tunes at the end of May. Memories and Magic has sat at around the 10k mark for months and months and possibly over a year because I keep getting angsty and self-doubt-y about it, and I keep rehashing the same thing in different ways. Fun times. So it is clear that taking on a new project was definitely a good idea.

For the WIPpet this week, I have 8 lines. Ria thinks perhaps she is not the only one with magic for a moment, but there’s a more scientific explanation for what Alex does.

As he stepped inside, he turned a knob by the door and a lamp lit up on the ceiling.

“How did it do that?” I asked. I stepped inside after him and looked up at the lamp. There was a glowing orb fixed in the centre of the structure. I had to look away after a moment as the light started to hurt my eyes.

“Electricity,” Alexander replied. “You saw all the cables running between the caravans and tents outside?” I nodded. I’d had to step over a few of them as we had walked around. “Whenever we stop, those are hooked up to generators to provide power.” He didn’t elaborate any further and I didn’t ask, though the sentence had made no sense to me.

To be honest, I’m not even sure if it’s feasible that a travelling group would carry generators around with them, or if that was even a thing back in the day. Research is for between first and second drafts. 😛

Hope you’re all doing well this week. 🙂

  1. I can definitely see how electricity could be seen as magical to someone who isn’t used to it. And I laughed at your comment about research. I do some before I start writing, but only a little during drafting(usually only if it’s something that I get really hung up on). Otherwise I make a little note and figure it out when I start editing.
