#WIPpet Wednesday – November 22, 2017

Hello and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a blog hop wherein writers share an excerpt from their current WIP that somehow relates to the date.  To join in, simply click the blue linky up there to the right.

Um. Hi. I didn’t mean to disappear for six weeks. But things got way too busy. For most of October, I didn’t write anything, and even though I have been free of uni commitments since the 4th of November, first I was on holidays, then it took a while to get back into routine, and then one of my goals was to read through a previous draft, so very little writing was happening. But I was determined to have something to post today. I’m also determined to actually visit your blogs and reply to your comments henceforth. I was looking back over my previous posts and I have so many unanswered comments, which just seems rude.

So in my last WIPpet Wednesday post back at the start of October, I talked about how I was attempting to write a Cinderella-inspired short story where the stepparent was in fact a stepfather. I haven’t figured out exactly how this is going to end yet, but I do know a bit more about it. For context in this excerpt, Jenny is a family friend. Ella is not allowed to go to a Christmas charity event with her mother and stepfamily (stepfather’s say-so) so Jenny swings something.

I don’t have any WIPpet math as such but it’s related to today because I wrote it specifically in order to have something to share today. So there. :p

Ella looked at her mobile. Jenny’s name and number were illuminated on the screen. She swiped to answer.

“Hey, Jenny.”

“Are they gone?”

“Um, yeah. Why?”

“Okay. I’m around the corner. I’ve got something for you.”

Jenny disconnected the call before Ella could say anything else. Ella shook her head and sat down on the couch, fully intending to continue with her plan to eat chocolate and watch sappy Christmas movies all night. Despite the phone call, she was still surprised when Jenny actually knocked on the front door a few minutes later.

When Ella opened it, her friend was standing there with a large box under one arm and an envelope in the other hand. She grinned and thrust the envelope towards Ella. Ella took it with a raise of eyebrows and stepped aside to let Jenny into the house.

“What is this?”

“Open it!”

Ella did so, and pulled out a slip of glossy paper. As she read over it, her eyes widened.

“How did you swing this?” she asked. In her hand was an invitation to the Inner Light* event. Her name was embossed in gold.

“I know one of the organisers. Our kids go to school together. It was easy.”

“But this is such a huge event. People don’t just swing invitations!”

“Trust me! We’ve got no time to argue; it’s starting in twenty minutes!”

* I did a search and a charity called Inner Light already exists (of course it does), but it’s doing the trick for now.

That’s it for now; I’m actually sneaking this post in at work. As I said, I really hope I will get around to your posts properly this week. No excuses.

  1. So… will the big donor at the event become our Prince Charming? Hmm… the possibilities!

(Don’t feel bad about missing days or comments. This year seems to have been insane for so very many people)
