Welcome! This month I’m writing a small story each day to try to brainstorm a future full-length novel, a sequel to my current WIP Memories and Magic, which is tentatively titled Rebels and Rebellions.

Today’s prompt is: Memorial

Clara huddled between Rikard and Max at the front of the crowd as the President of Rachara took the stand to recognise those who had fallen at the hands of the rebel magicians. The sky was overcast, matching the sombre mood of those that gathered.

“The past month’s events have shown that the decisions our forebears made to outlaw our nation’s brand of magic were sound. We, and those who come after us, must remain vigilant, and ensure that this type of uprising does not happen again.”

Clara saw in her head again the men and women of the enslaved rebel army, and found herself once again wishing she had been able to do more to help them. But there was no point in blaming the Racharans for ripping her of her powers. At the time, they had thought they had been acting in their country’s best interests. She would have able to do more if her powers had been enabled at the time, but she couldn’t dwell on that.

“You all right?” Max leaned over to her, sensing her discomfort. She nodded quickly.

“Just a whole bunch of what ifs going through my head.”

“Yeah. I’m having the same problem.”
